No More Tarik pe Tarik-Centre Introduces Bills in Lok Sabha, to Speed up Criminal Law Trials in Courts

New Delhi, Aug 13 (LAB) The Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Friday, introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha to repeal and replace the British-era laws of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.

These bills have been titled the “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita”, “Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and “Bhartiya Sakshya Bill”.

With the introduction of the new Bills, much-needed reforms in the Criminal laws will see the light of the day. It is a much-needed paradigm shift for an Independent India, even after 76 years of Independence, an obsolete criminal law of the British era was being practised in the  Indian Courts.

“The new bills provide for the digitalization of courts by 2027. Now it will be mandatory to complete the investigation in 180 days and the courts will be required to pronounce the verdict within 30 days from the date of framing of charges.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, is set to replace the IPC, and will entirely abolish the offence of sedition outlined in section 124A of the code, Home Minister Amit Shah announced while presenting the Bills.

“The old British Laws will be repealed as the focus of that laws was to protect and strengthen the British administration. Their idea was to punish and not to give justice. By replacing them, the new three laws will bring the spirit to protect the rights of the Indian citizen,” Mr Amit Shah said in the Lower House of the Parliament
