Anti-Sikh riots 1984: Delhi court acquits Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in triple murder case

New Delhi, Sept 20 (LAB) A Delhi Court today acquitted the Ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and three others in a case related to murder of three Sikh men during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots .

Kumar was accused of various offences, including IPC Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race, etc.), 109 (abetment of any offence), 302 (murder), and 147 (rioting).

The Congress leader was accused of killing a man and his son in Saraswati Vihar, West Delhi. The name of the victim Jaswant Singh and Tarun Deep Singh were burned alive on November 1, 1984, in Raj Nagar, by a crowd of more than 1,000 people.

The Karkardooma Court today discharged the former congress leader for the violation Section 302 (punishment for murder) and Section 325 (serious bodily harm) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sajjan Kumar was accused of inciting and abetting violence after the assassination of Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is alleged that a mob of some men headed by the congress leader set the two men on fire, while destroying their property and severely wounding the family members and relatives of the deceased.

Sajjan Kumar is one of the Six senior Congress leaders among Jagdish Tytler and the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath who are accused of taking an active part in the anti-Sikh riots in 1984, soon after the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. .

The Central Bureau of Investigation had filed an appeal against his prior acquittal in the Delhi High Court in August of the same year but the court granted him a life sentence on December 17, 2018.

Granting the life sentence the court had imposed charges under sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (offence is committed by any member of unlawful assembly in prosecution of the common object of that assembly), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups), 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 307 (attempt of murder), 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (deals with punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 395 (Punishment for Dacoity) and 426 (Punishment for mischief) etc. of the Indian Penal Code on the congress leader

Sajjan Kumar is currently lodged in Tihar jail after being convicted in another 1984- riots-related case./ LAB/UNI/
